It’s been a labor of love since 2003 when I drove my new 1968 Mercury Cougar XR7 home from Santa Rosa.
This kit features a sporty 14:1 ratio re-manufactured modern integral power steering gear box that provides benefits over a traditional rack & pinion conversion, while still offering a similar steering feel and an original look.Each box is carefully assembled, adjusted and inspected to standards that surpass OEM. Does not increase the turning radius like most rack & pinion kits.Installs easily with simple hand tools and without removing the engine.(I'm sure you're familiar with how working on classic cars can be a 'get-a-round-tuit' situation.) The system replaced the several troublesome parts (see photos) in the original system as well a simplifying the power steering in my 1968 Ford setup.I got Tired of the P/S hose routing after their proximity to the exhaust manifold was very exacting or the Pressure Hose will be Burned Through--something that has happened to me 4 TIMES since I owned the car (15 years.) I've also had to replace that awkward control valve that attaches to the 'actuator' on the tie rod with a pair of twisted hoses--many opportunities for slow leaks and road grime accumulation.
